Jim Tweedy and Charlie the RedCat



As a small child, New Orleans artist, Jim Tweedy would receive daily lessons from his father, a former Walt Disney artist. Jim's art education was the perfect combination of lessons in humorous art and years of serious study under prominent art teachers. NEWS& EVENTS As Jim began his career, the subjects of his work derived from things he loved. His great love of sports and animals has always drawn him to the canvas. It was only natural that one day Jim's cat "Charlie" would become the subject of his very humorous and popular "Charlie the RedCat" series. "Red is the perfect color for Charlie" says Tweedy. "It depicts every aspect of his personality because he's feisty. Charlie will tear around the house chasing a flashlight beam or leap high into the air to catch a rolled up pair of socks and he is forever getting into trouble in my studio. One of his favorite hobbies is to stand behind my easel and watch me paint. The little indentations that my brush makes on the backside of the canvas drives him crazy until he loses all self control and attacks." W E L C O M E ! Jim also regards Charlie the RedCat as his alter ego. He paints Charlie in many of the same places and situations he imagines himself. The finishing touches to his paintings are the titles. "My titles contribute as much to the overall painting as the actual artwork." Take "A Playful Game of Cat and Moose" Charlie sits in a tree while a moose stands down below. In "How Picasso Saw Charlie" a colorful and oddly proportioned Charlie, allegedly rendered by Picasso, is examined by Charlie who looks somewhat perplexed by this interpretation. And "Charlie Scores a Birdie", Charlie sits nonchalantly between a couple of sand traps, some yellow feathers scattered at his feet. The golf ball lying nearby might have missed its mark, but Charlie's aim is true, leaving him to ponder the difficulties some golfers have trying to score birdies. "Maybe if they would quit chasing them with clubs they might have better luck" thinks Charlie. Since May of 1992, Jim Tweedy has painted and sold more than 400 RedCat original paintings. Today, a RedCat original painting will sell the same day it is completed making the demand for his originals far outweigh his supply. Originals range in price from $1,250 to 11,000 with the first "RedCat Original" currently priced at $45,000. Jim Tweedy keeps pace by producing different kinds of prints from his favorite paintings. From offset lithographs ($50 to $275) to silk screened canvases ($450 to $1,250) to very limited edition hand-pulled serigraphs ($495 to $3,600). Recently, Jim Tweedy licensed Charlie the RedCat to a variety of companies. In addition to his original paintings and prints, Charlie the RedCat is available in clothing and gift items such as plush dolls, mugs, umbrellas, T- shirts, sweatshirts, socks, shoes, boxer shorts, calendars and children's clothing ranging in price from $10 to $75. Because the New Orleans French Quarter is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations, Jim Tweedy and Charlie the RedCat have received a great deal of international exposure and as a result major pet magazines have begun to focus their attention on Charlie the RedCat. And locally, the RedCat was chosen to be featured on what turned out to be one of the fastest selling lottery tickets in Louisiana Lottery history. The RedCat was also chosen to be the mascot for two major Louisiana festivals. In 1997, a wing of Richard Russell Gallery New Orleans was permanently dedicated to the RedCat. "Jim paints his RedCat solely for entertainment", says Richard Russell who is Jim Tweedy's agent and the owner of Richard Russell Gallery. "It's just a nice bonus that his artwork is a great investment." Now, Jim's work is at The Martin LaBorde Gallery, located at 509 Royal Street. When asked what he thought humor was worth to him? Jim Tweedy replied, "To me humor is priceless. My goal is to make people laugh. The biggest kick I get out of my paintings is just seeing people enjoy them."
